San Diego | Encinitas & Del Mar

We had such great advice going into our trip to San Diego thanks to a super sweet co-worker of mine who visited with her husband, and I think it is safe to say her advice won as far as our favorite part of the trip, but you don’t get to hear about that part of the trip until the next blog post.

We had more time than we had plans for Scotts free time in San Diego, but we were so incredibly lucky to meet one of the partners in Focal Point, which is the company Scott works through. We happened to sit next to him at one of the fancy dinners during the work part of the trip. Someone had mentioned he was a photographer, so we talked photos and business. He is an incredible photographer. It turns out he is a local to San Diego and just happened to go to the church we were planning to visit.

We had wanted to go visit North Coast Calvary Chapel, because the pastor just happens to be the father of Jon and Tim Foreman from Switchfoot. Scott and I are big Switchfoot fans. Dan happens to know Jon, which is really cool as well. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area. We loved hearing Mark Foreman speak, it was a great service and it’s very cool to see community happening on the other side of the country. We chatted for a bit with someone at the info area about Young Life. Their church is a big supporter of Young Life. Small world.

Dan recommended we drive up to Encinitas for breakfast. It was a very wonderful place. After we ate at the Encinitas Cafe, we drove down to watch surfers. The thing I love most about the beaches in San Diego is that you can look down on all of them from cliffs. There were a lot of surfers in the water that morning. It made Scott and I want to live out there and learn to surf. Our time in Encinitas was brief but great. Here are our Encinitas photos. If you look at the larger photo in the middle, all those black dots in the water are surfers.

After breakfast in Encinitas and church, we headed to Del Mar to spend the day at the beach. We met up with another local Scott met in his training, who talked to us about living in San Diego and recommended a few places for us to check out. He was so nice and invited us to come to his home. Sadly we timed our day poorly and ended up having to choose between the sunset at the beach and going, so we went for the sunset. Del Mar is a beautiful place. The beach is gorgeous to say the least. We laid on our hotel towels (shh…) and walked down the beach taking pictures. We saw a bunch of people climbing the cliff to get to the top. so we decided that was as good of a place to go up as any. We successfully made it up the cliff and walked into the town part of Del Mar. We visited a few local places, grabbed lunch, and then found some really great views. We ended the day at Del Mar watching the sun set. It was so perfect and beautiful.

If I ever get back to San Diego, I definitely want to spend more time at Del Mar. There was a surf shop we never got to check out because it was a Sunday and they closed a little before we went. Such a sweet town. Highly recommended.
